LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) – A petition drive that targets Governor Whitmer’s power to issue restrictions regarding the coronavirus across the board has reached 400 thousand signatures.
The group collecting the signatures, Unlock Michigan, says it is aiming to get 500 thousand before turning them in to the state Elections Board.
Proponents of the drive say they do not feel the 1945 law that allows the governor to issue orders without having to consult lawmakers should continue to stand.
It is anticipated that if the drive is validated, the GOP majority in Lansing would most likely repeal the law rather than allow it to go to a vote in 2022.
Whitmer has thus far defeated an effort by state lawmakers to reduce her executive powers in court. That case is headed to the state Supreme Court.
