HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Divers from the Van Buren Sheriff Department and South Haven Area Emergency Services returned to Lake Michigan Thursday, Sept. 10, 2020. Public safety officials also deployed a drone over the water off South Haven’s South Beach, in hopes of finding the body of an 18-year-old Jackson man presumed drowned.
The man disappeared under Lake Michigan’s waves while swimming with a friend, a 19-year-old Jackson man, on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2020, at a time when conditions deteriorated from cautious — yellow flag — to dangerous: red flag.
“We regret he has not been located,” public safety officials said in a statement emailed to media, representing SHAES, South Haven police, and dive teams from sheriffs’ offices in Van Buren and Allegan counties.
Public safety officials included a reminder in Thursday’s update that anyone visiting Lake Michigan should be aware that conditions can change quickly, and encouraged everyone to follow safety guidelines.
