DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – Spencer Turnbull pitched six innings of three-hit, shutout ball as the Detroit Tigers topped the Milwaukee Brewers 8-3 Tuesday night in Detroit.
The win moved the Tigers to within one game of the final American League playoff spot.
Jeimer Candelario and Jorge Bonifacio each had two-run singles in a five-run fifth for Detroit, which has won two-of-three since a four-game slide. Candelario also hit a two-run homer in the seventh for the Tigers.
Adrian Houser started and lost for Milwaukee. Jedd Gyorko, Avisail Garcia, and Omar Narvaez all singled in runs in the ninth for the Brewers, who dropped their third in-a-row.
In this afternoon’s series finale, Matthew Boyd gets the start for Detroit while Milwaukee sends Corbin Burnes to the mound.
Tigers infielder Jonathan Schoop left last night’s win over the Brewers after he was hit by a pitch. Schoop was hit on the right wrist in the fourth inning and did not return to the game.
He was diagnosed with a contusion and according to manager Ron Gardenhire, his tests came back negative. Gardenhire also said that Schoop told him he would be ready to play today.
