HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — In a Holland neighborhood where firecrackers are more commonly heard, gunshots rang out Thursday evening.
Holland police are investigating the drive-by shooting, at the corner of 17th Street and Central Avenue. The sound of four shots — which may have been fired from a passing car — drew neighbors out of their house. Several asked one another if, indeed, those were gunshots. They were.
Holland Police Sgt. Jon Boeve told WHTC several people called 911 after hearing the shots. People who’d been outside gathered at one corner, asking one another of the sounds were fireworks or gunshots — no one had seen the usual fireworks flash and there was no sign of smoke. Even as they spoke police were converging on the scene, questioning those outside.
Armed with flashlights and aided by police vehicle lights, officers searched for evidence, spotting at least one casing in the street.
Boeve said anyone who finds damage from bullets not identified Thursday night should call Holland police (616) 355-1100 or Silent Observer 877-88-SILENT — or call Ottawa County’s dispatch office, 911.
