ST. JOSEPH, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Fred Upton may be getting political flak from both sides this fall.
The veteran Republican Congressman from St. Joseph has had his seat targeted by Democrats for flipping on November 3rd, with challenger Jon Hoadley expected to get strong financial support from the national and state party. Upton has also been called a RINO – Republican in Name Only – for not walking in lock-step with President Trump during the past four years.
“As I have been in Congress for a number of years now, I have had a strong record of both agreeing and disagreeing with any president, whether they are Republican or Democrat,” Upton said on “WHTC Morning News” during his weekly appearance on Tuesday. “My sense is that most of my constituents don’t care, really, if you have an ‘R’ or a ‘D’ next to your name. They want the job done. They want you to listen, they want you to work with both sides (of the political aisle), and they want the country to move forward.”
Upton was commenting on a CBS News/YouGov poll conducted last Wednesday through Friday among a nationally representative sample of 2,226 US registered voters that indicated that seven in 10 respondents want to vote for Republican Congressional candidates who do what the President says, rather than be independent.
