SOUTH HAVEN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – There may not have been an annual “Salute to Veterans” event in South Haven for 2020 due to the COVID 19 outbreak, but that didn’t mean that there wasn’t anything special for those who serve in that Lakeshore community on Saturday.
While vintage World War II aircraft flew over South Haven, as well as over Saugatuck/Douglas, Covert and Bangor, the South Haven Area Emergency Services aerial truck displayed a large American Flag while parked at the American Legion Post 49 in South Haven to greet the Hooligan Flying Team flying those planes. Honor guards from the American Legion and SHAES were on hand for a 21-gun salute, and taps was played to honor those veterans who passed away during this pandemic.
According to organizers of this event, this tribute to “Citizen Heroes” was to salute first responders, health care workers and “essential” employees, as well as all who have followed safety protocols in respect for others.
The Star of the Lake Masonic Lodge and the Saugatuck Masonic Lodge sponsored the Hooligan Flying Team’s flyover.
