HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Allegan County’s board of canvassers unanimouly approved mail-in campaign to fix an omission of two millage issues for some City of Holland voters.
The problem, discovered just days before the Aug. 4, 2020, primary, happened when Ottawa County Clerk’s officials, who print all the ballots for City of Holland voters, were alerted by a voter that ballots for four precincts in Wards 4 and 5 districts were missing
The millage questions, for the Allegan Conservation District Millage and the Allegan Medical Care Facility, each failed by fewer than 200 votes. The four Holland precincts, which saw 1,701 voters return ballots for the Aug. 4 primary, could change that result.
City resident and Allegan County Commission chairman Jim Storey filed a formal request for the mail-in campaign, which Allegan County’s board of canvassers approved, 4-0, on Tuesday morning.
Allegan County Clerk Bob Genetski told WHTC his office has five days to get the special ballots in the mail to voters, who in turn have five days to get those ballots to Holland City Clerk’s office for counting. Ballots can be returned directly to the office, but the city also has a ballot box on the south side of Holland City Hall, 270 S. River Ave.
The language for each millage question is as follows:
Allegan Conservation District MIllage Ballot Proposal
Shall the limitation on the amount of property taxes which may be assessed each year against all taxable real and personal property in Allegan County be increased by not more than 0.10 mills ($0.10 per $1,000 of taxable value) for a period of six (6) years, 2021 through 2026, both inclusive, for the purpose of providing funds for the operation of the Allegan Conservation District, including programs to assist landowners in the protection and enhancement of natural resources, environmental education and environmental remediation within Allegan County?
If approved and levied in its entirety, this millage would raise an estimated $492,500 in revenue in the first year.”
Allegan County Medical Care Facility Millage Ballot Proposal
“Shall the limitation on the amount of property taxes which may be assessed each year against all taxable real and personal property in Allegan County be increased by not more than 0.25 mills ($0.25 per $1,000 of taxable value) for a period of ten (10) years, 2020 through 2029, both inclusive for the purpose of providing funds for the operation, maintenance and improvement of, and any other purposes authorized by law in support of, the Allegan County Medical are Facility?
