GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WNWN) – Military veteran and the grandson of the retail chain founder Peter Meijer will be the GOP nominee in the race to replace U.S. Rep. Justin Amash in West Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District.
With 67% of precincts reporting, Meijer of Grand Rapids had nearly 50% of the vote followed state Rep. Lynn Afendoulis of Grand Rapids Township at 25% and former Sand Lake Village Trustee Tom Norton at 17%.
Meijer called the results a “resounding message that we are tired of playing the political games of the past.”
The 3rd Congressional District spans from Grand Rapids to Battle Creek.
The 3rd District has been in the national spotlight for more than a year as Amash, who was re-elected as a Republican in 2018, publicly feuded with President Donald Trump and parted ways with the GOP.
He considered running for president as a Libertarian and running for re-election as a third-party candidate. He ultimately decided against both options, leaving the seat he’s represented for a decade open.
Meijer had a huge financial advantage in the race, raising $1.5 million through July 15.
