HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The beach-hazards statement in effect Saturday has been extended through 8 p.m. Sunday, July 19, 2020, according to meteorologists at the National Weather Service. The beach hazards apply to Allegan and Ottawa counties and along the Lakeshore as far north as Mason and as far south as Van Buren counties.
People are advised to stay out of Lake Michigan. Swimming is dangerous because of high wave action and strong currents. Piers will likely be heavily swamped by waves.
Strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water and high waves can sweep people off piers.
South winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph, with waves building to 3 to 5 feet north of Holland.
The south side of south piers will be most dangerous such as at Grand Haven State Park.
Thunderstorms will impact Lake Michigan tonight into Sunday morning. Storms could be strong to severe.
