HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A 29-year-old Kentwood man drowned Monday evening while trying to retrieve a football that had drifted into the lake at Georgetown Township’s 8th Avenue Park, 7000 8th Ave.
Sheriff’s deputies, with Georgetown Township firefighters and a Life EMS crew responded to the call for help from people who’d pulled the man from the lake.
Witnesses later told police the man went into the lake just after 5:45 p.m. Monday, June 22, 2020, to get a football that had drifted about 25 feet out onto the water.
People on shore saw him struggling in the water and go under, according to Sheriff’s Sgt. Nicolas Knott. They took rafts out and were able to get him back to shore, attempting resuscitation until the Sheriff’s Georgetown Township E-Units arrived minutes later and took over life-saving measures, which were ultimately unsuccessful, Knott said later, in an email to media.
The man’s name is not being released, pending family notification. The incident remains under investigation, Knott said.
