HOLLAND (WTHC-AM/FM) — On the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on protecting employment for LGBTQIA people, Out on the Lakeshore officials have decided to attempt to secure similar protections in the City of Holland.
In a Facebook post Tuesday, June 15, 2020, they wrote that, with Holland Mayor Nathan Bocks recently affirming diversity and inclusion are top priorities in 2020, they want to see an update in the city’s existing non-discrimination ordinance.
On June 15, 2011, a similar effort by Until Love is Equal put before the city council failed, with then-Mayor Kurt Dykstra casting the deciding “no” vote.
Out on the Lakeshore officials appealed to council in December to again consider the protections, and want to press for the changes this year.
To that end, they are collecting signatures of people who live or work in Holland as another to show support for officially protecting employmnet regardless of religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status. They’re also asking for the city’s housing ordinance to bar discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
The petition is online and organizers are asking that each person sign only one time: https://outonthelakeshore.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0efa150189cda7014281c1cec&id=33385809ad&e=ff8496b70b
