HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Add the Holland/Zeeland Community Labor Day Truck Parade to the growing list of annual events that have fallen victim to the COVID 19 outbreak.
The board of the Truck Parade announced on Monday the cancellation of the scheduled September 7th festivities that would have seen 75 trucks of various sizes and purposes drive from the Herman Miller complex in Zeeland to the Heeringa Holland Civic Center Place parking lots in a show of support for local business activity.
“This was a very difficult decision, but our event draws thousands of spectators and we do not want to risk their health in any way by encouraging a large gathering,” Event Coordinator Shannon Yanek said in a statment. “Unfortunately, we had to make this decision now as it takes months of preparation to plan this event.”
“Now more than ever, it is important to recognize and celebrate the businesses, and truck drivers, who have kept our economy moving over these difficult months, “said Board President and Holland City Councilman Mike Trethewey. “We had hoped to be able to do that with our event, but the timing just doesn’t work for this year. We are already looking forward to the 2021 event being bigger and better than ever.”
The truck parade joins the Tulip Time Festival and the Ottawa County Fair as annual events that have been cancelled for 2020 due to the coronavirus-imposed health restrictions in Michigan.
