HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Allegan County officials have offered a list of tips on how to enjoy Memorial Day weekend while keeping the “stay-home” rules in mind.
Sheriff Frank Baker, in a statement emailed to media, encourages area residents to make the time “to reflect upon and honor those service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice” and pursue activities in a safe way.
His tips include:
- Drink responsibly and utilize a designated driver if necessary.
- Anyone boating is asked to make sure everyone is wearing the proper type of personal floatation device, even excellent swimmers, as a crash could make them unconscious or otherwise unable to get to a flotation device.
- Executive orders requiring masks, social distancing, an staying home are still in effect.
- County officials appeal to everyone to be considerate of those working in grocery stores and restaurants and follow proper guidelines.
Allegan County officials offered these Memorial Day weekend suggestions:
Ways to honor of those who died serving in the military:
- Observe the national moment of remembrance at 3 p.m. Monday, May 25, 2020
- Display patriotic decor at home
- Send a care package to active military supportourtroops.org/care-packages
Outdoor activities:
- Backyard camping
- Sidewalk chalk mural 13 chalk art ideas
- Backyard barbecue with household members
- Sign up for a virtual-bike event, through June
- Boat or kayak county water trails on rivers and lakes
- Exercise is encouraged and those heading to the beach are asked to abide social distancing and be aware several beaches have closed such amenities such as bathrooms, playgrounds and concession stands.
- Picnic at home or at a county park
- Know the rules for legal fireworks and sparklers at home. Fireworks are allowed Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day, until 11:45 p.m.
Support local community:
- Order take out from local restaurants
- Check in on your neighbors, enjoy the company at a social distance
- Farmers markets
