HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Grand Haven’s Fourth of July fireworks are canceled, according to City Manager Pat McGinnis.
Though rumors abound about the future of the 2020 Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival, the committee has not yet announced a decision. Festival officials tell WHTC they’ll make an announcement later this week.
The festival dates back to 1924, when the annual as a Coast Guard personnel-only picnic included rowing competitions for service members stationed in Grand Haven.
Starting in 1937, the festival became an event to celebrate Coast Guard service members and honor those who lost their lives in service, supported by communities of Grand Haven, Spring Lake, and Ferrysburg.
The Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival typically attracts more than 350,000 people from around Michigan and more-distant places, including Coast Guard dignitaries based in Washington, D.C.
Congress designated Grand Haven as “Coast Guard City, USA” on November 13, 1998.
