WASHINGTON (WHTC-AM/FM) – President Trump wants to restart the economy soon, but a fellow Republican on Capitol Hill is a little more cautious.
At a White House briefing on Wednesday, Mr. Trump said the data shows many areas around the country have passed the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak. He credited the White House’s “aggressive strategy” of confronting the respiratory illness as many businesses across the country have been shut down for weeks to try and slow the spread.
The President may be optimistic about restarting the economy, but Republican Congressman Fred Upton of St. Joseph says the decision may not be Mr. Trump’s to make. “As much as the President wants to open things up, and we all do, I think you’re going to have to let the virus really determine where things are at the end of the day” Upton said during a recent interview on “WHTC Morning News.” “We know that we are not there yet, so let’s just wait and see where this thing takes us.”
The fallout has caused an unprecedented spike in unemployment claims, and the 350 billion-dollar federal program to help small businesses impacted by the pandemic is nearly broke.
