POLKTON TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The forensic autopsy performed on Monday March 9, 2020, at Spectrum Health Blodgett in Grand Rapids confirmed the identity as Coopersville resident Hunter Klompstra, 18.
The cause of death appears to be drowning, said Ottawa County Sheriff’s Capt. Mark Bennett, in an email to media, adding, “The investigation continues however at this point foul play is not suspected.”
Family and friends searching on Saturday found his body Saturday, March 7, 2020, in Grand River, south of Coopersville. He’d gone missing early New Year’s Day, after leaving a party.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Christie Wendt, a private search party that was organized and family and friends of Hunter Klopmstra discovered what appeared to be a body in some water off of Leonard Street west of 60th Avenue, and not far from the Grand River. Responding deputies confirmed the discovery. Divers recovered the body, which then went to Spectrum Health Blodgett for an autopsy to confirm the identity and a cause of death.
According to a Facebook post, the Saturday search commenced around 11 a.m. at Deer Creek County Park, in the vicinity of where Klompstra was last seen, and the discovery came less than a half hour from when it began.
