ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Should a coronavirus outbreak occur in Michigan, are schools ready?
Zeeland School Superintendent Cal DeKuiper says that having past experience dealing with outbreaks of SARS and other similar types of diseases can be helpful … to a point. “Certainly we’ve learned from things that we’ve done before, but (this could) be a little bit different, so how do you apply what you did before?” he said during a Thursday appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town.” “A number of weeks ago, we shut down one of our schools for three days, going through our buildings, cleansing, sterlizing and spraying. Whether those are the types of things that we’re going to be doing, I don’t know, but we do have the equipment, if that’s what they recommend.”
On Wednesday, the Michigan Association of Superintendents emailed its members, saying that its officials were talking with those in the state Department of Education, the Michigan Department of Community Health and other health organizations on the matter of dealing with COVID-19, and DeKuiper is looking for further guidance on the matter to come from those meetings.
