OSCODA, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) — The leading contender for Michigan’s first horizontal spaceport is the Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport.
That’s according to Michigan Aerospace Manufacturers Association officials, who conducted a site selection process over the past eight months.
The northern Lower Penninsula airport received the highest ranking because of its runway infrastructure, business capacity, operational strength and safety track record according to association officials.
Seven other sites were evaluated around the state. Last June, Michigan lawmakers set aside $2 million to assess the feasibility of developing one or more low-orbit launch sites in Michigan.
“This is an exciting next step in the process of developing Michigan’s ecosystem of space technology,” said Gavin Brown, executive director of MAMA, in a statement. “While much work lies ahead, we are pleased to share these initial results from our due diligence. Such a facility would solidify Michigan’s leadership role in the aerospace and defense industry while becoming an important economic catalyst.”
