ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a new phone scam that has been reported in the area.
Police say that over the last few days, the Sheriff’s Office has received multiple complaints of scammers posing as Sheriff’s Deputies. The scammers are asking potential victims to call back a phone number provided, upon which they are warned that they owe money.
Occasionally, the scammers are said to request an in-person meetup to exchange the money.
Police are warning that they will not call citizens to request money for legal matters.
Police say that if a citizen is unsure about the legitimacy of a call, contact the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office right away at 269-673-3899 to report the call.
This is the third scam reported in the Western Michigan area this month. The first reported phone scam featured scammers posing as Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Deputies, while the second one featured scammers posing as Michigan State Police Officers.
