Erwin “Erk” Mast, age 86 of Zeeland passed away Monday, November 4, 2019.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years Alnora; her children: Scott (Nancee) Mast, Pam (Cal) Boeve and Sandy (Mike) North; grandchildren: April and Pete VanVolkinburg, Dan Mast, Emilee and Joe Mally, Katie Scott, Josh and Jessica DeJong, Kendra Kulier, Lexi and Mitch Schutter, Braden North, step grandchildren: Meagan Pheuk and Tyler Boeve; 9 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Joyce Mast, Myra Mast, Hildreth (Henry) Van Dyken, Sharon Engelsman, Jerold (Carole) Engelsman, Janice Loew, Glenn Engelsman, Carol (Jim) Timmer and Cindy Engelsman.
Erk was born on December 1, 1932 on the family farm in Drenthe where he worked until his retirement. Erk served during the Korean Conflict in the Army, stationed in Germany. He was a lifelong member of Drenthe Christian Reformed Church where he served as an elder, deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and taught Sunday School for 25 years. Erk was actively involved in The Gideons International for 43 years. He volunteered at Bibles for Mexico and The Bridge Youth Center. Erk also served on the Zeeland Township Fire Department for several years and for a period of those years as chief.
Erk was preceded in death by his brothers: Rufus, Harold, John JR.; his sisters: Mae Jerene Mast and Evelyn Peterman.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, November 8, 2019 at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 South State Street, Zeeland. The funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, November 9, 2019 at Drenthe Christian Reformed Church, 6244 Adams Street, Zeeland. Interment will be in West Drenthe Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to The Bridge Youth Center, Bibles for Mexico or Faith Hospice-Trillium Woods.
