HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Several bills are working their way through the State House that would expand expungement rules — the ability for someone with a felony to get their criminal record cleared.
Doing so, says Zeeland Republican Rep. Brad Slagh, will open up many job opportunities for people who want to work, but whose criminals pasts keep them under- or unemployed.
He said the bills don’t allow everyone’s records to be expunged — but is a way to recognize that some people, as teens or young adults, were convicted of certain crimes and have since had a long record of abiding the law.
He said multiple bills are being considered, and encouraged people to contact lawmakers in the House and Senate, as well as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to share their stories.
