HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Two West Michigan Republican Congressmen, Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, and Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland, issued statements responding to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s call on Tuesday for a formal impeachment inquiry.
Pelosi had long deferred the call for an inquiry. After President Trump is alleged by a whistleblower to have pressured Ukraine’s president using the threat of withdrawing military aid unless there was a Ukrainian investigation of former Vice President Joe Biden and his late son Hunter Biden for corruption. If such a request was made, Pelosi said, it would be a violation of the law, and a breach of the President’s Constitutional duties.
Put simply, under the U.S. Constitution, the House investigates the matter, and if evidence supports charges, House members would vote on articles of impeachment, with the Senate holdng the trial.
The statements, in full:
Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph:
“With the President authorizing the release tomorrow of a fully declassified and unredacted transcript of his phone conversation with the President of Ukraine, we will be able to look at just the facts without any spin. As I’ve been saying, the allegations are troubling, but I believe it’s important that we get all the information out in the open before we make any conclusions.”
Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland:
“I believe the IG report should be made available to both the House and Senate Intelligence Committees and I look forward to reviewing the transcript of President Trump’s call with the President of Ukraine.
“Calling for an impeachment inquiry before fully grasping what was discussed isn’t in defense of the Constitution, it’s merely a craven political move to try to invalidate millions of Americans who voted to elect President Trump.”
