HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Zeeland resident Margaret Kroll is one of many people celebrating a birthday today, Sept. 17, 2019. But she’s the only one whose daughter called WHTC — because Kroll is an avid listener to the radio station.
“I just thought it would be something special,” said Carla Bryan, one of Kroll’s five children. “Everybody loves my mother. She’s a very sweet lady.”
Margaret Huizen Kroll, born in Overisel, married Gene Kroll and raised their children — Mary, Carla, Nanci, Jon, and Ron — in Zeeland.
Growing up in the Kroll household, Bryan said her sweet, loveable mom never got angry. The worst she’d ever say, Bryan recalling, laughing is, “Oh, heck, Carla!” to which Bryan would respond, “Mom, don’t you ever get mad?”
Bryan says her mom loves life and is fun to be around.
“Everybody at church loves her,” Bryan said. “She goes to Frank’s in Zeeland a lot. Her picture is on the wall.”
The family has already celebrated Mrs. Kroll’s birthday three times over the weekend — at her house, then at the Farmhouse Restaurant, and then at James Street Inn. Today, Bryan said, the family has a variety of plans to fete Mrs. Kroll, which will likely include dining out for every meal.
In sharing photos of her grandmother-in-law, Elizabeth Paschke-VanDerMeulen wrote in an email to WHTC, “We think it’s fantastic that she will be celebrated. She is a fantastic person!”
