HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The Hope College Knickerbocker Theatre’s fall film season opens with “The Farewell,” starting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2019.
The film screens at 7:30 p.m. each night through Saturday, Sept. 21.
“The Farewell” is a comedy-drama about a family in China, who learn their beloved grandmother has terminal lung cancer, and only a few months to live.
They decide not to tell her, arranging an impromptu wedding as an excuse for a family gathering before she dies. All this take place as Chine-born and American-raised Billi tries to navigate her two cultures, even as she struggles with the family’s decision to keep her beloved grandmother’s illness secret.
Billi flies to China for the wedding, despite her parents’ plea for her to stay away and protect the secret.
The film is rated PG, and is English and Mandarin with English subtitles.
Other films in the series include “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am” on Sept. 30–Oct. 5; “Photograph” on Oct. 7-12; and “Yuli” on Nov. 11-16.
Tickets are sold at the door and cost $7, with a $6 rate for senior citizens, Hope College faculty and children.
The Knickerbocker Theatre is at 86 E. Eighth St., between College and Columbia avenues in downtown Holland.
