HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed September as Michigan’s Preparedness Month.
Ottawa County Emergency Management officials are working wtih Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division to host the 2019 Prepare Fair at the Walmart Supercenter in Holland Township from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019.
Prepare Fair 2019 is an opportunity to meet local emergency responders and learn aboutdisaster preparedness. Free food and promotional supplies will be distributed while they last.This family friendly event includes:

- Michigan State Police Mobile Command Unit
- MSP OK 2 SAY
- Several Ottawa County Fire Departments
- Holland Department of Public Safety Ice Cream Truck
- Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office K-9
- Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team
- Ottawa County Hazardous Materials Response Team
- Ottawa County Emergency Management Volunteer Programs
- American Red Cross
- The Salvation Army
- American Medical Response
- Life EMS
- North Ottawa Community Hospital EMS
- Other disaster response partners
Ottawa County Emergency Manager Nick Bonstell says severe thunderstorms, high winds, and flash floods are just a few of the emergencies and disasters common to our area. Being ready for one emergency often makes you more prepared for most emergencies. Here are a few tips he shared:
- 1. Be informed
- Sign up for SMART 911; visit www.smart911.com
- Make an emergency communication plan for your family and/or business
- Build an emergency supply kit to be self- sufficient for 72 hours
- Learn basic first aid skills
- Get involved in community programs like CERT (Community Emergency Response Team)
