HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – No injuries were reported when a residence south of Holland’s Historic District caught fire on Tuesday morning.
According to Department of Public Safety Captain of Fire Operations Chris Tinney, first responders were dispatched to a two-story, single-family home in the 400 block of Maple Avenue, near West 17th Street, around 9:30 AM. They saw smoke coming from the rear of the building near the roof and located flames in a back corner of the attic. It took about 25 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
Smoke detectors were installed and had been activated by the time fire fighters arrived, but the alarms didn’t immediately sound because the fire was contained to the attic and had gradually “banked down” into the living area. The occupants did notice the smoke and fled the scene safely.
Nobody in the house at the time, nor any responders, reported any injuries. Tinney said that an initial investigation indicated a possible electrical wiring issue led to the cause of what it believed to be an “unintentional” fire, with no dollar estimates of damage caused immediately determined. However, he believed that repairs could be made in order for the home to be reoccupied.
Park Township department crews were among those from several agencies that assisted with Holland Public Safety firefighters at the scene.
