ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – The weather may be ideal this weekend to enjoy the water along the Lakeshore, but the after effects of a very damp spring and early summer continue to linger.
Many beaches and boat ramps are simply inaccessible due to high water levels, even on Lake Michigan, and Allegan County Board Chairman Jim Storey, a Holland Republican, regrets not having all of his county’s parks at full accessibility right now. “One of the unfortunate problems that the rising Lake Michigan levels have caused has been the tremendous erosion,” he explained in a Friday appearance on “WHTC Talk of the Town.” “It’s really sad because we were proud of very proud of (having public accessibility). We’re doing the best we can to preserve what you can see, but we also have to worry about public safety.”
According to the US Army Corps of Engineers weekly Great Lakes Water Level Update from this past Friday, levels have been high for much of the summer but are projected to have a net decrease by this time next month.
