HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Allegan County Sheriff’s deputies got a few helping hands while chasing down a domestic violence suspect early Sunday morning, Aug. 4, 2019.
A Sheriff’s Office statement emailed to media indicates police were called to aid the victim in a vehicle that was moving in the area of 135th Avenue and 18th Street, in Hopkins Township.
A man had allegedly assaulted a woman in the car, and was refusing to let her go. He was also threatening her life, police said. She was able to alert 911, and dispatchers were able to track the vehicle’s location.
Deputies found the vehicle, which appeared to be speeding through Village of Hopkins, and attempted a traffic stop, police said. The man driving the car refused to pull over, according to police.
Police pursued the vehicle toward US-131, then southbound. Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputies and Michigan State Police troopers deployed stop sticks on US-131 near West Main Street; the suspect continued driving southbound, with deflated tires, police said, eventually stopping against median cable barriers on I-94 near the Calhoun/Kalamazoo counties’ line.
Police arrested the male suspect, and brought the woman to safety, police said.
The man remains in Allegan County Jail, awaiting arraignment on several charges suggested by police to the Allegan County Prosecutor. No names are being released until after arraignment, police said.
In addition to Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputies and MSP troops, Allegan County deputies were aided by Gun Lake Tribal Police Department, Plainwell Department of Public Safety, Western Michigan University Department of Public Safety, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Portage Police Department, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, Pride Care Ambulance, and Galesburg Fire Department.
