HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A man drowned in Lake Michigan Saturday, July 27, 2019, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Ruster.
Police were called to the 3300 block of Lakeshore Drive in Park Towship at about 4:30 p.m., after homeowners spotted a man struggling in the surf, then go face down after flagging for help.
Bystanders and beachgoers helped to bring the man onto the shore where there was beach, despite the rough surf and waves.
Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics started CPR on the man less than 10 minutes from when he was seen face down in the water, but life-saving efforts were to no avail and he was pronounced dead at the scene by Ottawa County Medial Examiners officials.
Police are working to identify the man, after which family must be notified before his name can be made public.
Ottawa County Central dispatchers and the National Weather Service has reported waves to be in the 3-to-5 feet range, wth an undertow. Winds were southwest, 20-30 mph. A beach hazards advisory (red flag) statement had been in effect all day Saturday.
