HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The National Weather Service’s Grand Rapids meteorologists say the series of storms that blew through Southwest Michigan early Saturday delivered a microburst of 80 mph winds in Jenison.
That microburst damaged a Jenison home, NWS officials said.. The storms overall downed trees and snapped power lines, with measured wind gusts reaching 60-70 mph through Muskegon, Ottawa, and Kent counties.
Thunderstorms developed after sunrise in Mason and Lake counties, remained stationary for several hours, dumping 6 to 10 inches of rain in the hardest-hit locations, leading to widespread flooding.
Some roads were closed as a result — drivers are cautioned not to cross flooded roads or bridges. Weather officials often say in these situations, “Turn around, don’t drown.”
Afternoon storms that rolled through Lower Michigan resulted in sparse reports of damage and some additional power outages.
