HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A Spring Lake woman died in a traffic crash just after 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2019, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Ruster.
Sheriff’s deputies and Grand Haven Department of Public Safety officers were called to the report of a crash between an SUV and a semi-tractor trailer, on northbound US31 near Comstock Street, in Grand Haven Township.
Police found a 59-year-old Spring Lake woman who had been ejected from her vehicle by the force of the crash. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ottawa County Medical Examiner.
Police believe the woman, whose name is not being released pending family notification, tried turning right onto eastbound Comstock from southbound US31, where there is a blinking yellow signal (indicating yield). She appears to have turned into the path of a northbound semi, which at that time had a green signal at the intersection.
The crash sent the woman’s 2004 Infinity SUV rolling into the road, at which point she was thrown from the SUV. The semi driver was not injured.
This traffic crash remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriffs Office.
The Michigan State Police Accident Reconstruction Team assisted at police at the scene. Both northbound lanes of US-31 from Comstock Street north to Robbins road were closed for at least three hours.
