HOLLAND (WTHC-AM/FM) — High water levels, intermittent heavy rain, and winds gusting to 35 miles an hours — creating waves on Lake Michigan hitting 3 to 4 feet — are combing to erode beaches and water is getting pushed into channels between pier heads and may create the risk of flooding for areas near the water, according to the National Weather Service.
High lake levels may be behind a sidewalk collapse in Kollen Park near the boat launch, according to Holland City Manager Keith Van Beek. City officials
“We’re pretty sure that it’s relatied to the high water, that it eroded behind a seawall, and then we had a sidewalk failure, because of that,” he said. “The thing is, water typcically wins, right? There’s not much, in a lot of ways, that we can do to protect against that.”
City officials are brainstorming ways to make a resilient fix, however, Van Beek said, adding that the work would be done “in such a way that if the water stays at these levels or even goes a bit higher, that we would protect against that.”
