Although it appears that I'll be handling Talk of the Town on an extended basis while Ed Ver Schure regains his health, I'll still be making time to post observations here.
Can we put the Russia Investigation to bed?
At first glance, it appears that Robert Muller’s
eight-minute-plus statement on Wednesday morning was meant to do just that. In
calling for the closure of the Special Counsel’s office on the matter, he said
that his written report would serve as his final word on the matter, and that
he would not comment further on any other aspect of the two-year-long probe.
No matter where you stand on the political merits of the
investigation, it would appear that it’s time for America to move on. Bringing
up impeachment articles against the President would not serve any good purpose
other than to keeping this matter alive as a campaign issue in 2020.
Frankly, those who are trying to keep on pursing the matter
could reasonably be accused of attempting a coup, of attempting to overthrow
the American government through overthrowing the Executive Branch. This is not a Watergate,
where a special prosecutor was able to flesh out potential criminal charges
against the president that probably would have been filed had Richard Nixon not
resigned.
Instead, it’s an ongoing effort to depose Donald Trump, with
the effect being that future “unpopular” presidents could be subject to similar
probes aimed purportedly towards “the truth,” but in reality are just power
grabs. It’s really no different than having the armed forces storm in, take the
elected leader out by force and establish a junta … only in this case, it would
be a political junta rather than a military one.
Again, let’s put the Russia investigation to bed and let the
American electorate decide in 17 months whether to make a change in government.
That’s what we are supposed to do in this country.
