PORT SHELDON TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – There were some anxious moments at the Ottawa Area Intermediate School District complex north of Holland late on Thursday morning.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Detective Captain Mark Bennett, a staffer at Sheldon Pines School heard “a loud suspicious noise.” That building, along with the neighboring Careerline Tech Center, were placed on lockdown while the noise was being investigated by several Sheriff’s Department units.
The officers “quickly” determined that no students or staffers had been injured or were in danger. It was found that a vehicle which a student had attempted to start in the parking lot had “backfired,” causing the loud noise that could have been mistaken for a gunshot sound.
Bennett added that, “Normal activities at the schools were resumed shortly after that discovery, and it appears that the protocols were followed appropriately.”
