HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Holland Area Arts Council is set to host a kids’ spring-break camp calle “The Bizarre Biology Body Spring Break,” 1-4 p.m., Tues. April 2-5, 2019.
Aimed at students 8 to 12 years old, this camp uses STEAM principles (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) to teach children about the human body.
With an emphasis on art, kids will sculpt anatomically correct models of internal organs out of paper mache, wires and tubes and sew a storage bag.
Mary Sundstrom, the arts council’s program director and exhibits co-coordinator, said students will walk to Hope College and look at specimens though microscopes. (Listen to the full interview.)
They’ll also be creating in the kitchen, making what Sundstrom called “Jello ‘brain’ molds” and cookies that resemble “poop.”
Children should wear comfortable clothes, that can stand getting possible paint stains, she said, and bring proper coats, jackets or other outer wear for walking to Hope College.
Reigstration is required and costs $105 per student or $95 member, with a $10-off sibling discount. Scholarship rates are available.
