OTTAWA COUNTY (WHTC-AM/FM) — Two teens being held in Ottawa County’s Juvenile Detention Center made a break for it during a church outing late Thursday evening, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. J. Douglas.
They were part of a group outing to a Holland Township church near 104th Avenue and Mason Street for a skills-building class, Douglas said. He declined to name which church was involved, saying no one at the church had anything to do with the incident.
“They’re very low-risk offenders, otherwise they wouldn’t be out going to these types of classes,” he said. “And they were, I mean, the public was never in danger, or anything like that.”
Sheriff’ deputies, with an assist from Holland Department of Public Safety’s K-9 team, quickly located the teens in a nearby neighborhood.
They were unharmed and returned to the Ottawa County Juvenile Detention Center. The police investigation report will be forwarded to the Ottawa County Juvenile Court for review, Douglas said. the court will decide what, if any, penalties will be added to the juvenile offenders’ records.
