ALLEGAN COUNTY (WHTC-AM/FM) — In an unprecedented move, the Allegan County Community Foundation (ACCF) is proud to announce an early 2019 LEGACY grant award for $5,000 each to Christian Neighbors Plainwell, Project Hope and Community Action Allegan County.
The foundation made the move in light of somewhat convoluted aid process. Since October 1st, anyone who needs emergency utility assistance in Michigan must apply to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) before getting any help from other agencies. And if the help is denied, the resdient is not allowed to seek help from any agency that receives money from DHS, which includes Salvation Army, TruNorth, THAW, etc. This, foundation officials say, makes vulnerable people more vulnerable.
CEO Theresa Bray said the foundation typically gets funds in May and that, she says, is too late to help those in crisis.
The Allegan County Community Foundation awarded $289,740 in grants to non-profits serving Allegan County last year. The foundation accepts donations from the public to continue helping people in need.
