HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Holland-area churches are offering daytime warming services for people of all ages and genders and at Christ Memorial, an overnight shelter for women and children – men will be transferred to a different facility — for the next three days. The Holland Rescue Mission is relaxing their policies to welcome anyone who needs shelter during the winter storm.
Ottawa County Emergency Manger Nick Bonstell said his office is monitoring conditions. American Red Cross shelters won’t be opened unless there’s a power outage or other incident affecting a large number of people.
Churches are asking for donations of pillows, hand warmers, socks, cases of water, ground coffee, powdered hot cocoa, loaves of bread, jars of peanut butter and jelly, canisters of oatmeal or boxes of instant oatmeal packets, paper bowls, plates and napkins, plastic spoons, disposable coffee cups; cash or gift card donations for food are also welcome.
Anyone donating to Christ Memorial can being items to Door D starting at 9 a.m. today; email communications@christmemorial.org or call 796-3370 to learn more or volunteer.
Volunteers, are needed, too, at all the warming churches, whether to lending a hand with food service and clean-up or otherwise.
