The beginning of a new Congressional session is still
something special for Bill Huizenga.
The US House Representative had family members on hand as he
was sworn into office for the fifth time on Thursday. “Natalie (his wife) and I
decided a long time ago, when we first set out on this adventure, that we
wanted to be together as a family every time this would happen,” the Zeeland
Republican said during his weekly conversation with us on “WHTC Morning News”
today. “We wanted to be together for every presidential inauguration because it
is a very, very special thing in our system of government. It’s not about the
person, it’s about the system.
“It’s about this experiment (in government) that started (in
1776) that hadn’t been done anywhere else around the world (at that time). It really
allowed people to have a direct say as to how their government would be run. It’s
fascinating (seeing) the obvious twists and turns politically, where the country
has gone over the decades and centuries, but the system, as flawed and
imperfect as it is, is still the best system that the world has ever seen to
allow people to be fully engaged with their government.”
It seems as if we have forgotten our civics lessons … or
perhaps more convicting, never had those civic lessons … as the lack of respect
for our government, for those who are in our government, continues to grow on
all levels.
Thanks!
