ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – With the enactment of Michigan’s recreational marijuana law less than three days away, local municipalities apparently have to work fast to enact ordinances on whether or not weed can be sold and/or used within their communities.
If the City Council votes to approve a measure during this evening’s meeting, Zeeland will be among those local entities that would continue to ban cannabis. According to the proposed ordinance amendment before the panel, “the majority of the electorate of the City of Zeeland did not vote to approve Michigan Initiated Law 1 of 2018 … the Michigan State Medical Society (also) opposed the approval of the law … because the health risks are too great … and … the City of Zeeland desires to promote a healthy environment.” Violators of this “municipal civil infraction” could face a fine of between 100 and 500 dollars, plus court costs, on a daily basis.
The Holland City Council is slated to vote this Wednesday on an ordinance to place restrictions on certain activities for those using marijuana, making it a civil infraction with a 100-dollar fine.
In addition, tonight’s 7 PM meeting will be the first for new Zeeland City Council member Phung Lam, who was appointed by the other council members last Wednesday in a special meeting to replace Schuyler Wilson, who resigned on October 1st with about a year left on his four-year term.
