HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — A 19-year-old Rochester man is in serious condition at Spectrum Health Butterworth in Grand Rapids after a two-vehicle crash late Thursday night, according to Ottawa county Sheriff’s Sgt. Jay Douglas. The Rochester man is a GVSU student, Douglas said, adding that no names are being released at this time, pending notification of relatives.
The crash happened just before 11 last night on Pierce Street, just west of 52nd Avenue, Douglas said.
That’s when a Volkswagon attempted to pass the Rochester man’s Charger, Douglas said.
The Volkswagen’s two passengers were hurt. The 18-year-old front seat passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, went by Life Ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital and is in serious condition, Douglas said. The 21-year-old back-seat passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, refused treatment at the scene, but later went by private car for emergency room treatment, and his condition is unknown, Douglas said. Both passengers are Allendale residents.
The Volkswagon’s 18-year-old driver was treated at Spectrum Health Butterworth, and released to Ottawa County Jail, Douglas said, because alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
Allendale Fire Rescue assisted at the crash scene.
