HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — The Bissell Pet Foundation‘s free pet adoption program is coming back this Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018.
The Bissell Pet Foundation says last year more than 3,100 pets were adopted in one day through its Empty the Shelters initiative and this year they are hoping for even more. Harbor Humane’s executive director, Jennifer Self-Aulgur, said Bissell is not only paying the adoption fee, they’re throwing in a handy basket of goodies for the early adopters — because there’s a limited supply of baskets.
“It’s a great opportunity to get an animal, and then, instead of paying the adoption fee, you have all that money to go and spoil the pet and buy all the goodies and pay for that first vet visit,” she said.
She said people do have to be approved to adopt and that Harbor Humane is using the reoutine approval process, even with same-day adoptions. She noted that cats are always a two-for-one deal, because felines like having company. Fees typically range from $25 for an adult cat to $250 for a puppy, she said.
For one day only, Saturday, October 6, 2018, Bissell will cover pet adoption fees, but owners must still pay for pet licenses.
People should think about the commitment it takes to have a pet, Self-Aulgur, and expect any new pet to take a few weeks to adjust to its new household. People sometimes make the mistake of thinking an animal will seamlessly integrate into the home, but that’s never the case, she said — but a little patience can go a long way to calm an anxious dog or cat.
