HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Holland City Council voted unanimously to revoke the Economy Inn’s license after repeated code violations and too-many police calls.
Councilmen Wayne Klomparens and Scott Corbin were not at last night’s meeting.
Mayor Pro Tem Mike Trethway said council members aren’t trying to shut down businesses; they just want the problems fixed.
“We don’t want to put anyone out of business,” he said. “For crying out loud, we give out tax breaks all the time to help businesses establish themselves, and grow and thrive in the City of Holland.”
City officials had suggested working with the inn’s owner to correct the issues. Tretheway said the problems date back to 2011 and that recent issues, with squalor and more than 100 police calls over the last several months, became the tipping point.
“Enough is enough,” he said, adding that there’s “some concern” for the people currently living at the motel, but “even the least of us don’t need to put up with things like that.”
Tretheway said it’s a rough situation and he hopes it can get resolved on a more-permanent basis.
Economy Inn’s owner filed suit against the city last month, citing lack of due process.
