FENNVILLE (WHTC-AM/FM) — Tuesday’s 26th District debate in Fennville, moderated by WHTC morning host Gary Stevens, included all four candidates vying to replace term-limited Senator Tonya Schuitmaker. (See the debate video here.)
The 26th District includes all of Allegan and Van Buren Counties, and Gaines Township and Kentwood city in Kent County.
Republican Aric Nesbitt, a former state representative and former state lottery commissioner, said he wants to fix the high cost of car insurance, road repairs, and reduce government debt.
Democrat Garnet Lewis, Saugatuck planning commissioner and small business owner, said her three reasons for running include giving voters more options; giving all residents adequate representation; and her desire to help create bipartisan solutions to “everyday issues.”
Green Party candidate Robert Alway, a former Otsego planning commissioner, talked about his experience protecting the environment, especially the Kalamazoo River, and better education.
Libertarian Erwin Haas, former Kentwood City commissioner and Vietnam vet, talked about his Bavarian heritage — and his mom’s escape from Hitler’s Germany — and said he wants to shrink government
