HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — City of Holland officials have suspended Economy Inn’s business license, and in response, the hotel owners are suing the city.
Shree Vishnu II Inc., doing business as Economy Inn, 409 US-31, filed a lawsuit against the city on Sept. 21 in Ottawa County 20th Circuit Court, a day after the city suspended the license, according to a report by City Attorney Ron Vanderveen.
Vanderveen’s report indicated a high rate of code violations and too many police calls led to the license suspension. The motel’s lawsuit, the second filed since the start of 2017, claims the city’s new ordinances, passed in 2016, prevent due process. City officials will consider a management plan with the motel to get it back into code compliance, according to Vanderveen’s report.
Holland City Council is scheduled to host a public hearing during it’s Oct. 3 meeting — set to start at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2108. The meeting will include time for the hotel owner to speak, as well as anyone from the public. The meeting’s complete agenda is online at cityofholland.civicweb.net/Portal/MeetingInformation.aspx?Org=Cal&Id=567
Among the changes the management plan would institute:
- On-site, trained security officers, who agree to call police for specfic types of incidents.
- Routine access to visitors’ room by housekeeping staff.
- A formal process for reporting maintanence and repair issues.
- Routine and prompt removal of waste, from filled-up dumpsters to abandoned vehicles.
- A significant reduction in the need for police calls.
- Clear rules with residents maintianing a site free of illegal weapons an drugs.
