ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Although nothing will be finalized this evening, a concept for improving the walking area surrounding the Howard Miller Community Center will be discussed by the Zeeland City Council.
In the work-study session prior to the 7 PM meeting at City Hall, the panel will go over proposed improvement concepts for what City Manager Tim Klunder and City Marketing Director Abby deRoo is calling “Library Alley” – property north of the community center, the driveway behind buildings housing a realtor and an investment advisor, a patio area and a sidewalk that leads to Main Street. Meeting the past few months with a variety of urban planning advisors, along with property owners associated with this initiative, Klunder and deRoo is looking for ways to improve the walkways that they claim is “arguably unsafe to maneuver with wheelchairs, strollers, bikes, and definitely does not reflect the quality of public space that downtown Zeeland is known for.”
With boiler updates to the community center pending that could expand Zeeland’s snowmelt system, this Library Alley project could be worked into the city’s current strategic action plan. Klunder added that he and his staff “hopes to collect feedback and direction from City Council on how to proceed with the Library Alley project concepts so that we can continue to work through those timing questions and financial implications involved with the project.”
Interested parties are encouraged to attend the Zeeland City Council work-study session that begins at 5:45 PM this evening. A link to the agenda and supporting documents is here.
