OTTAWA COUNTY (WHTC-AM/FM) — Ottawa County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash in which the driver, a 72-year-old Muskegon man, lost consciousness on Tuesday, July 10, 2018.
The man is in Mercy Health Hospital after suffering from what Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Buter called “a medical event.”
The man, who police are not identifying at this time, had been driving a 2006 Freightliner semi tractor trailer north on U.S. 31 near Hayes Street when he lost consciousness, Buter said.
Callers told dispatchers they saw the truck drive through the median, across the southbound lanes, coming to rest in a tree-filled area, Buter said.
A retired doctor out for a walk performed lifesaving efforts on the unconscious man until authorities arrived and an ambulance took the driver to Mercy Health in Muskegon, Buter said. No one else was in the vehicle with the man, and no one else was hurt in the crash, he said.
