HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Dealing with billing for waste handling and a proposed new causeway connecting Windmill Island Gardens with the city of Holland highlight Wednesday night’s City Council work-study session.
For the last five years, Chef Container had not only taken care of dealing directly with the Tulip City’s residential solid waste and recycling program, but had also sent out bills to customers directly as a cost saving measure. With Allied buying out Chef earlier this year, Holland’s Community and Neighborhood Services department recommended to council that the Holland BPW should resume handling this billing responsibility due to other factors not connected with Allied’s acquisition of Chef. During tonight’s session, council will go over a “memorandum of understanding” about this matter.
In addition, council will review the latest developments involving the construction of a needed pedestrian causeway that would better facilitate access to Windmill Island than the current two-lane motorized roadway provides. This project was put on hold when attempts to secure grants for a related connector to Holland’s North Side were stymied for various reasons, but city staff continued to work on designs for not only this causeway, but for a complete mill and repaved trail around the DeZwaan Windmill, as well as replacing the island’s water main.
No final decisions will be made during the 5:30 PM work-study session in the second-floor Training Center at Holland City Hall; a special closed-door meeting is slated for after the session to “consider legal options,” according to the agenda that can be accessed here.
