LANSING (WHTC-AM/FM) — Eleven fatal crashes took the lives of 15 people during the 2018 Memorial Day weekend, according to Michigan State Police figures.
Last year, 10 people died in 10 crashes.
Of the 15 who died:
- Five involved motorcycles. Two victims had been wearing helmets. Authorities were unable to determine of the other three victims had used them.
- Alcohol was a known factor in at least two of the fatal crashes.
- Restraints were not used in one and unknown in four crashes.
- One victim was a pedestrian.
“These numbers are preliminary and only reflect those fatalities reported to the Michigan State Police as of 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 29,” said Michigan State Police 1st. Lt. Jim Flegel, in a statement released to media. “We continue to urge motorists to always use proper restraints and to make responsible driving decisions. Never operate a vehicle while impaired on alcohol or drugs and avoid all distractions.” The 2018 Memorial Day holiday weekend ran from 6 p.m. on Friday, May 25, through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 28, 2018, according to Tuesday’s MSP statement.
