HOLLAND TOWNSHIP (WHTC-AM/FM) — Residents of Holland Charter Township’s Woodside Green neighborhood were stunned Sunday evening by a one-car crash that cut power to their homes overnight.
The crash happened at the intersection of Riley Street and Thornberry Way, at 7:50 p.m., according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Austin.
A 25-year-old man was speeding and tried “abruptly turning onto Thornberry,” Austin told WHTC, adding that the driver “lost control, ran off the roadway and struck a utility pole.”
The car rolled over. The driver and another occupant of the car managed to escape and fled the scene.
But the driver couldn’t escape his mom. She showed up as police were investigating and told officers her son was at her home. A deputy accompanied the woman back to her house, where the driver was arrested and jailed on charges of drunken driving and fleeing the scene of a crash, according to Austin, who did not release names of the driver or other occupant of the car.
Holland Township resident Joyce Gallop Barkel praised Consumers Energy for quickly restoring power.
